Cellular Jail – A Silent Witness to India’s Freedom Struggle

Cellular Jail, located in Port Blair, is one of the most significant historical landmarks in the Andaman Islands. Often referred to as “Kala Pani,” this colonial-era prison holds deep emotional and historical importance for its role during India’s freedom movement. It was built by the British in the late 19th century to exile political prisoners and revolutionaries far from the Indian mainland.

The jail’s structure is unique—originally made up of seven wings radiating from a central tower. Each wing had multiple solitary cells, designed to isolate prisoners completely. This harsh form of imprisonment was meant to break the spirit of those who fought against colonial rule. Many prominent freedom fighters, including Veer Savarkar and Batukeshwar Dutt, were imprisoned here under extremely difficult conditions.

Today, the jail stands as a preserved monument open to visitors. Walking through its silent corridors gives a powerful sense of the sacrifices made by countless brave individuals. The small museum inside shares their stories through photographs, personal items, and documents from the past.
